GENERAL ASSEMBLY

Los Angeles, CA

Duvivier Architects worked with their client, General Assembly, to restore an old laundry building with a hidden history, into a state-of-the-art editing facility.

This 100 year old brick building required a complete gut remodel including new plumbing, electrical, insulation, dormers, windows, drywall, brick repointing, and structural upgrades. In the process of doing this work, it was discovered that the location was also LA’s first dedicated cooperative gallery and art space for women. “Womanspace,” founded in 1972, was a response to the wholly lacking inclusion of women in the LA art world at the time. It is the first space on any record of the women’s art movement in Los Angeles, a precursor to the Woman’s Building.

Our clients have embraced this incredible history to demonstrate that inclusion can take many forms. The space now has several editing/finishing rooms, offices, a full kitchen and a gallery.
