CULVER WEST RESIDENCE

Culver City, CA

3000 SF Single-Family Home

The Culver West Residence is a new two-story, single family dwelling designed for a couple and their 2 little children, located in the quiet residential area in Culver City. The goal is to create a light-filled house with natural ventilation that averts pollution and noise of the nearby freeways. The simple, open plan was designed to maximize air flow, and passive heating/cooling by placing the double-height living room at the southern rear of the site, that emphasis deciduous trees and framed views. The 2nd story has 3 bedrooms and 2 and half baths. The finishes were chosen to balance the modern Japanese style of the house and some traditional features such as an area for crafting, a steam sauna, tokonoma-esque alcoves (for art work and quiet mediation/contemplation), and a manga reading area, placed in the middle of the house facing the living room so that the family has an open lighted area where they can sit and read their manga comics and continue to collect their favorite pieces. The entry was also important for them and a beautiful genkan was created for shoes to be removed before entering the main living space, which is elevated six inches above the floor level of the entryway. The Culver West Residence is in a neighborhood that was formerly planted with orange groves adjacent to Ballona Creek , recreates the orchard with fruit trees and sustainable landscaping and rainwater collection. The house has natural day lighting throughout as well as an extensive solar array
